Somehow, over the summer, gossip (usually traced back to the magic world's newspaper, the Daily Prophet) has turned Harry's tragic and heroic encounter with Voldemort at the Triwizard Tournament into an excuse to ridicule and discount the teen. Even Professor Dumbledore, headmaster of the school, has come under scrutiny by the Ministry of Magic, which refuses to officially acknowledge the terrifying truth that Voldemort is back. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, more than any of the four previous novels in the series, is a coming-of-age story. Harry faces the thorny transition into adulthood, when adult heroes are revealed to be fallible, and matters that seemed black-and-white suddenly come out in shades of gray. Gone is the wide-eyed innocent, the whiz kid of Sorcerer's Stone. Here we have an adolescent who's sometimes sullen, often confused (especially about girls), and always self-questioning. Confronting death again, as well as a startling prophecy, Harry ends his year at Hogwarts exhausted and pensive. Wie haben wir gebibbert, gewartet und nervös an den Fingernägeln gekaut, bis wir endlich den nächsten Band der Abenteuer von Harry Potter in den Händen halten durften - keinen einzigen Tag vor dem vom Verlag festgesetzten Termin vom 14. Oktober 2000 (nun gut, die englischsprachige Ausgabe gab es schon zum 8. Juli, aber das ist eben auch nicht jedermanns Sache). Und wie halten wir uns nun die Ohren zu, wenn uns jemand verraten will, wer den Quidditch-Worldcup gewinnt, in wen Harry sich verliebt und wer derjenige von den altvertrauten Figuren ist, der das Ende von Band 4 nicht überleben wird - alles wollen wir selber lesen, die ganzen 800 Seiten von Anfang bis Ende.
Aber so viel sei verraten: Die Weltmeisterschaft im Quidditch ist nicht nur ein sportlicher Höhepunkt, sondern auch eine organisatorische Meisterleistung (wie geben Tausende von Zauberern und Zauberinnen sich den Anschein, eine ganz harmlose Versammlung von Muggels zu sein?). Und der im Titel erwähnte "Feuerkelch" spielt eine nicht unbedeutende Rolle dabei, dass die Zauberschule Hogwarts im Wettbewerb mit zwei anderen Schulen einen gewissen Vorteil erhält. Sie haben richtig gelesen: Zwar haben wir uns bisher kein einziges Mal gefragt, ob es noch andere Zauberschulen außer Hogwarts gibt - mit seinem weiten Gelände, das sich zwischen den Gewächshäusern der Botanik-Lehrerin Prof. Sprout, dem See und Hagrids Hütte mit seinem Zoo an absonderlichen magischen Kreaturen erstreckt, schien es uns wie ein kleines perfektes Univerum. Aber so wie Joanne K. Rowling die Schüler aus dem noblen Beauxbatons und dem abgelegenen Durmstrang beschreibt, die in Hogwarts zu Gast sind, muss man ihr einfach glauben, dass es die reine Wahrheit und irgendwie schon immer so gewesen ist, so wie wir ihr auch jede Menge Poltergeister, Hauselfen, Einhörner, Zentauren und sonstige magische Wesen glauben.
Lord Voldemort, auch bekannt als Tom Riddle, auch bekannt als das Böse in Person (wenngleich seit einigen Jahren ohne einen eigenen Körper und quasi nur als eiskalter geistiger Hauch vorhanden) hat längst nicht aufgegeben, Harry nach dem Leben zu trachten - und langsam, ganz langsam gelingt es ihm auch mithilfe des ihm ergebenen Wormtail, neue Kräfte zu sammeln. Das fünfte Schuljahr in Hogwarts: Harry ist mittlerweile ein 15-jähriger Jugendlicher, der durchaus auch mal unter Zornausbrüchen und Launen leidet und rebellisches Verhalten an den Tag legt. Den Sommer verbringt er mit den unsagbar langweiligen und nervtötenden Dursleys - die Rückkehr nach Hogwarts sollte demgegenüber eine echte Erleichterung sein. So denkt er.
Viel ist im Vorfeld des Erscheinens der englischen Ausgabe gerätselt worden: der Pubertierende lernt die Liebe kennen, eine wichtige Person muss sterben - stimmt, aber mehr wird nicht verraten! Nur so viel: die Zentauren aus dem Verbotenen Wald kommen erneut hervor, Lord Voldemort dringt gar in Harrys Träume ein, Harrys Blitznarbe auf der Stirn schmerzt immer stärker. Die neue Lehrerin Dolores Umbridge macht ihm das Leben auch nicht leichter: Bezweifelt sie und mit ihr das Zauber-Ministerium doch weiterhin die Gefahr, die von Lord Voldemort ausgeht. Und: Was früher ganz klar schwarz oder weiß war, gut oder böse, entpuppt sich als undurchsichtig und vielschichtig, welches ist der rechte Weg? Harry wandelt sich vom staunenden Wunderkind zum nachdenklichen Jugendlichen auf der Schwelle zum Erwachsenwerden: voller Fragen, Unsicherheit, Aufbegehren.
